Public Health Maternal and Young Child Nutrition Specialist

McKing Consulting Corporation is seeking a public health specialist who focuses on maternal and young child nutrition to engage with CDC’s Maternal, Infant, and Toddler Nutrition Team in implementing the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity’s (DNPAO) strategic activities to improve optimal nutrition in the first 1,000 days (pregnancy through 24 months of age)

The Public Health Maternal and Young Child Nutrition Specialist will:

  • Provide subject matter expertise to help advance optimal nutrition in the first 1,000 days.
  • Use knowledge of maternal and child nutrition science to review or prepare briefing documents, publications, and presentations, or other materials as needed.
  • Provide expertise and analytic support analyzing nutrition data, with a focus on topics related to maternal and young child nutrition.
  • Providing analytic support in validating and replicating nutrition analyses to ensure accuracy of findings and conclusions.
  • Provide expertise in writing high-quality scientific documents outlining key findings related to maternal and nutrition topics.
  • Coordinate the provision of indicators on maternal, infant, and toddler nutrition for release in reports, interactive data websites, or other consumer-friendly avenues.
  • Provide knowledge and content expertise on infant and young child feeding in emergencies.
  • Perform systematic reviews of scientific literature on topics related to maternal, infant, and young child nutrition and associated health outcomes and clearly summarize findings for CDC input.
  • Summarize findings of complex scientific, nutrition-related topics for different audiences, including government partners, state and local recipients, lay audience, and the scientific community.
  • Update and lead the development of surveillance reports and associated materials as needed.
  • Review and provide subject matter expertise, suggested edits and recommendations on documents related to maternal and young child nutrition submitted from Federal partners or other key partners for CDC input.
  • Routinely communicate information on activities and efforts to team members and team leader, as requested.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience

  • Masters degree in human nutrition, dietetics, public health, epidemiology, behavioral science, nursing, or a related public health discipline.
  • Experience working in a research or public health setting focused on maternal and child nutrition.
  • Experience analyzing complex survey data and longitudinal data.
  • Proficiency with common word processing, spreadsheet, and graphics software (especially MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and analytic software (R, SAS, or SPSS).
  • Experience summarizing complicated nutrition information for a range of audiences.
  • Proven verbal, written, listening and presentation skills.
  • Fluency in English language.

The ideal candidate will also have the following:

  • Registered Dietitian, experience working as a nutritionist (e.g., in a WIC clinic or with a WIC Program), or have a certificate in Maternal Child Health/Nutrition.
  • Experience in behavioral, environmental, policy aspects of breastfeeding support, and maternal, infant, and toddler nutrition.
  • Experience working within the federal government setting and writing for government agencies.
  • Strong ability to work independently (self-motivated) under a general scope of program objectives and duties of the position.
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills.
  • Fluency in another language, such as Spanish (not required).
