Job Description:  

Company Profile: A Brooklyn based shipyard is seeking to hire machinist.

Ideal Candidate: The candidate should  have some mechanical training or experience - it does not need to be within the marine environment. Individuals would need to be familiar with mechanical tools, be capable of taking direction, and bilingual English/Spanish would be a plus. They would be helpers and their work would be directed by a second or first-class machinist or the machinist supervisor.

Position Summary: The Inside/Outside Machinist is responsible for the repair and maintenance of pumps, hydraulic systems, auxiliary systems, and diesel engines within a marine environment. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals

Required Skills:  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for installing, repairing, overhauling and maintaining pumps, hydraulic systems, auxiliary systems, propulsion systems and diesel engines.
  • Ensure that vessel projects are accomplished safely, efficiently and within shipyard policies and guidelines as well as all applicable local, State and Federal codes.
  • Removal and reinstallation of conventional shaft and propeller systems, and controlled pitch propeller systems.
  • Removal and reinstallation of various rudder assemblies including rudder stock, pintles, etc.
  • Rigging oversight to support required work scope.
  • Repair, overhaul and maintain shipboard mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Take precision measurements and machine parts to specification when required

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)  required;  a  minimum  of  five years  related experience  and/or  training;  or  the  combination  of  education  and  experience  that  enables  performance  of all aspects of the position.

Physical Skills and Abilities:

May require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to climb stairs and narrow ladderways; or the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) weights up to ten pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to  fifty  pounds,  and  occasionally  lift  and/or  move  more  than  one  hundred  pounds.      While performing the  duties  of  this  job,  the  employee  is  regularly  required  to  use  hands  to  finger,  handle,  or  feel;  reach  with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. Specific vision abilities  required  by  this  job  include  close  vision,  distance  vision,  color  vision,  peripheral  vision,  depth  perception,  and  ability  to  adjust  focus. Requires  good  hand-eye  coordination,  arm,  hand  and  finger  dexterity,  including  ability  to  grasp,  and  visual  acuity  to  use  a  keyboard,  operate  equipment  and  read  information. Use  of  personal  protective  equipment  such  as  respirators,  hard  hats  and  safety  footwear  required while on work sites. Work will involve visiting work sites both indoors and outdoors at all times of the year. Normal Working Hours and Days:

Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. including 1 hour meal break. Mandatory overtime as required
